High Accuracy Horizontal Machining Hardened SteelMulti Pallet Horizontal for XtracReleased at: 14:00 05/01/2006 Xtrac’s policy of continual investment in the latest technology has further enhanced the quality and accuracy of their product, having recently purchased a Matsuura ES-450HII PC5 (5 Pallet) and a Zeiss PRISMO CMM, expressly for the purpose of post heat treatment hard machining and qualification of dogged components.
The investment in one of Matsuura’s latest horizontal machines with closed loop control and excellent structural rigidity enables the precise machining of dogged features. The five pallet loading system enables quick change over and greatly reduced setup time. Pallets are loaded off line whilst the machine is cutting. There is a dedicated tooling solution for all dogged components to achieve the quality requirements and to minimise setup and change over time.
![]() Acquired for its inherent high accuracy, the ES-450HII comes with BigPlus full face and taper contact spindle tooling capability, and the latest technology Renishaw Spindle Probing and Laser Tool Measurement Systems. Feed rates of 15m/min and rapid traverse speeds of 40m/min, provides a high-speed hard milling option. The ES-450HII allows the use of air blow during hard milling, or coolant flood when soft machining.
The Zeiss PRISMO is the latest generation of co-ordinate measuring machines, and utilises dedicated Carl Zeiss developed sensor systems, scales and control systems to produce a solution built specifically for scanning. With the increased accuracy requirements of the tight tolerance angles, radii and heights of a hard machined dog, Xtrac needed a highly accurate CMM to qualify the components to a greater level of accuracy than ever before. This has also enhanced Xtrac’s overall qualification systems improving inspection accuracy over a wide range of other precision components.
The PRISMO machine utilises a Carl Zeiss developed VAST probe enabling high precision scanning and allowing the measurement of dimension, form and position in a single run with no mechanical alignment, additional setup or inaccuracies. Xtrac have also invested in a dedicated tooling solution to enable full inspection of each component in a single run, to keep change over and run time as brief as possible.
The investment of just over £500,000 provides Xtrac with the very best technology to accurately manufacture and qualify hard machined dogged components, and to respond quickly to customer demand and deliver right first time and on time. Xtrac utilise several Matsuura Machining Centre's, including the new 5 axis MAM72-25V (10 Pallet).
