Qualtronic Ltd was founded in 1984 to provide a high quality Precision Engineering Service to various industries including Aerospace, Defence, Power Generation, Communications, North Sea Oil & Medical.
Located 30 miles north of Edinburgh with quick access to two airports, a cross channel ferry terminal and all major road and rail networks, Qualtronic are a provider of ultra high quality, tolerance critical complex machined parts.
A recent addition to their extensive range of Matsuura machining centres is the investment in a twin pallet High Speed Matsuura H.Plus-405 Horizontal Machining Centre. This machine produced dramatic improvements in the machining capabilities & capacity for Qualtronic & has resulted in them taking on new work that was previously beyond the technical limits of their machine tool stock – including taking work from a major competitor, a contract for producing a complex part from solid. This is just one example whereby the H.Plus-405 machine has delivered a tangible return on investment, & improved quality & performance for Qualtronic.

Case study component “BOX”
Operation: Machine complete from Aluminium billet 6082T6 material.
Achieving consistent wall thicknesses of 2mm x 85mm deep all over holding =/- 0.1mm typically with parallelism and flatness tolerances of 0.05mm.High levels of stability in the H plus 405 machine and process have resulted Surface finishes have improved dramatically realising typically 32 Cla all over .Previously hand finishing operations were required to achieve an acceptable level of surface quality.

The machine was supplied by MMP with 15k spindle & Renishaw MP7 part probing package to further reduce setting times and part location.
Typical cutting data achieved on the part is 15,000 rpm & 6500mm/min federates @ 8mm doc roughing. Finishing utilises a waterline milling technique @ 10-12000 rpm doc axially and radially of .3 mm @ 4000 m/min feed.

The nature of Qualtronic’s business means any investment must deliver flexibility and value for money. This H.Plus-405 machine regularly machines various 316 stainless steel & alloy steel components as part of Qulatronic’s wide and varied customer base. The machine accuracy, stability and spindle performance delivers the versatility to meet their customers ranging & exacting requirements.

Ian Heaton Business Development Manager at Qualtronic states that this installation has resulted in an increase in orders from this client alone of around 70 % into 2006. Qualtronic see a growing requirement from their customer base for machining from solid, particularly critical when material integrity and stability is a key component feature. New markets have opened up for Qualtronic & an overall increase in confidence exists to tackle complex tolerance critical components.

Further developments of this technology will be embraced avidly over the coming years , of which Matsuura will surely feature. Qualtronic have looked at "cheaper" solutions from various manufacturers. However, concerns over build quality & reliability have consistently resulted in the decision to choose Matsuura machining centres. As Ian puts it “it does exactly what is says on the tin”. In addition, the back up, service & technical assistance from Matsuura is very re-assuring.
